What to Give the Groom on the Wedding Morning

The gift from the bride to the groom is the one wedding present with a delivery problem. It has to reach him on a morning when the two of you are deliberately in different rooms, usually via somebody else, and it has to survive being opened in front of his friends.

That constraint rules out more than taste does. Work backwards from it and the shortlist gets short fast.

What to give the groom on the wedding morning

Something he can put in a pocket, and a letter.

The letter is the actual gift and everybody knows it. The object exists so there is something to hand over, something to hold while he reads, and something that carries the date afterwards. Get the object small enough that it does not need explaining to the room, and the letter does the rest.

This is also why the object should be usable that day rather than admired that day. A gift he can carry into the ceremony stays part of the wedding. A gift that goes back in the box until they get home is a gift he opened while distracted.

Three that work

A personalized handkerchief — $32.95. The one that meets the constraint exactly. At 11.8 inches square it fits a jacket pocket, it has a job during the ceremony, and it comes home carrying the day rather than a memory of a box. Ours are printed satin rather than embroidered: the artwork, print colour and lettering style are fixed, and you enter the initials, names, date or short line you want printed. Choose between a stitched hem and a lace border.

Pocket-sized, usable during the ceremony, and dated afterwards. Personalized Wedding Handkerchief for the Groom, $32.95.

A ring dish for his side of the bed — from $22.95. Unromantic on paper and the most-used gift on this list. It is where a wedding ring goes at night from the day they get home, which means it is in his hands twice a day for years. Buy it dated.

Something matching, for after. Couple aprons start at $32.40 and embroidered couple sweatshirts at $69.95 — check each listing for what is included at that price. Either way this is a bad wedding-morning gift and a good honeymoon or first-anniversary one, because the point of a matching thing is wearing it together, and on the wedding morning you are not together.

What to avoid

Anything he has to react to publicly. Getting-ready rooms have an audience. A gift that requires a big reaction puts him on the spot in front of six people with a camera in the room.

Anything expensive enough to be a conversation. A watch is a lovely gift and a difficult wedding-morning gift, because the first thing anyone in the room says about it is what it must have cost. That is not the note you want the day to start on.

Anything he already collects. If he is particular about whiskey, cologne, headphones or knives, you are buying into a category where he has opinions and you will be judged against them. Pick a category where "you chose this for me" is the whole point.

Wedding hashtags and inside jokes on permanent objects. The joke is funny now. It is on the object in fifteen years.

The handover

Decide who carries it and tell them the night before. This is the part that goes wrong: the gift is beautiful, and it is in a bag in a hotel room on the wrong side of town.

Give it to the best man, a parent, or the planner, with a time attached — "before photographs" rather than "sometime this morning". If you are exchanging, agree that you are both doing it, because a one-sided exchange is a small, avoidable ache in an otherwise good hour.

And write the letter by hand. Type it first if you need to; copy it out by hand afterwards.

Before you order

  • Small enough for a pocket, and usable during the day rather than after it
  • Nothing that demands a public reaction in a room full of people
  • Dated, if you want it to still make sense in ten years
  • A handwritten letter, which is the actual gift
  • A named person carrying it, with a time, agreed the night before
  • Timing: production runs 1 to 3 business days, then 5 to 7 days for tracked US delivery, about 6 to 10 business days in all

Handkerchiefs, ring dishes and matching pieces are in wedding gifts and keepsakes.
